No one wants unauthorized changes to their thermostats. And when it happens too frequently – like our client Juice Press, who saw thermostats set to permanent holds as low as 50° for days on end – it can drive up your electricity bill.

But putting your thermostats under lock and key isn’t a perfect solution: it can be too inflexible if you don’t allow any changes, and make both customers and employees uncomfortable in your business.

That’s why we made Auto-Reset: A new way to manage your thermostats. With Auto-Reset, your thermostats can allow small changes during the day, and return to your preferred settings and schedules every night. Say goodbye to permanent holds and unnecessary electricity consumption, knowing your space is running comfortably and efficiently all on its own.

What is Auto-Reset?

Auto-Reset is part of the David Energy thermostat management system. It’s a feature that checks your thermostats to make sure they’re operating on schedule, and if not, automatically returns them to that schedule each night.

Auto-Reset prevents thermostats from getting stuck at low, energy-hungry settings, avoiding expensive bills and HVAC overuse. It’s here to make sure that you never have to worry about if thermostats have been messed with, because they now know to go back to your preferences all on their own.

How Auto-Reset Works

Auto-Reset works by monitoring each of your thermostats for deviations from their programmed schedules. When it detects something that’s not following schedule, it will return the thermostat to its recommended schedule each night (or at the optimal time for your business).

When you join as a David Energy customer, we’ll get each of your thermostats set up on the David Energy platform. Your preferred schedules will be set, and each thermostat opted in to Auto-Reset. We designed it as a set-and-forget feature, in that once your recommended schedules are in place and approved by you, our system will continue to manage and run these operating procedures on its own. You don’t have to lift a finger.

If at any time you want to turn Auto-Reset off, you can opt out on the individual device on the Control Room page with the Auto-Reset toggle in your customer dashboard.

Auto-Reset Tackles Thermostat Headaches

Auto-Reset isn’t just about peace of mind – it can help with energy efficiency, spend reduction, and operational complexity at your locations. Read on to see the top problems we built Auto-Reset to solve, and the ways it's making a difference in our clients’ businesses.

Employees changing thermostat settings lead to overspending on unnecessary heating & cooling

Thermostats in permanent holds as low as 50° for days on end. That’s what was happening to our client Juice Press, before they partnered with David Energy to implement better thermostat management. For many businesses, this is a common occurrence from employees changing the thermostats, and it leads to unnecessary heating and cooling, even during unoccupied hours. And when you’re doing more heating and cooling than you need to, you’re using more power, and your bill goes up. With Auto-Reset, changes last no more than a day – making sure you’re back to optimal efficiency in no time.

Thermostat schedules can be difficult to enforce

When there’s no consistent, reliable thermostat schedule that matches your operating hours, you’re likely missing out on energy saving opportunities. But enforcing schedules is no easy task, and can sometimes be in conflict with customer comfort requests. With Auto-Reset, ensure schedules are always followed – with the flexibility to make changes if you need to to keep customers happy and business running smoothly.

Constant changes overtaxing HVAC system

When left unchecked, changes to your thermostat can cause undue strain on your HVAC system—leading to inefficient operations that can spike your bill, or necessitate costly repairs or replacement. Auto-Reset makes sure that your system is put back to an optimal setting each night to keep everything running smoothly.

Stress on managers and operators

With Auto-Reset, you no longer have to worry about closing checklists, monitoring your employees’ thermostat changes, or constantly checking on thermostat settings. With David Energy’s convenience platform, that’s now taken care of for you. Plus, Auto-Reset provides employees with the flexibility to make changes to ensure they and customers are comfortable, while giving you the peace of mind that any changes they make will revert back to standard settings that evening.

How Auto-Reset helped this David Energy client save thousands

Crunch Fitness in NYC was struggling with monthly electricity costs and unpredictable bills. They took the step of installing smart thermostats, but without expertise in configuring them, they saw little pay-off – from member complaints about gym temperatures to employees frequently changing settings and placing the thermostats on permanent holds.

But once they integrated with David Energy’s software, we provided real-time insights into the gym's thermostats and operations, allowing for efficient management of heating and cooling systems. By implementing schedules enforced by Auto-Reset, Crunch was set up with efficiency-oriented operating procedures and setpoints to ensure they were using their HVAC as effectively as possible.

Over the next year, they saved $4,490 in energy spend thanks to better thermostat management.
